22.3.2005 Eritrea, Massawa

Postby Maza » 31.3.2005 22:40:54

Asmara, the town with a lot of ifluence from Italy. Italians were hanging in Eritrea in the beginning of century until the end of second world war. In Asmara there is many excellent coffee and bakery places. Also the main market is colorfully and grazy place. Best thing to buy from Asmara is great leather shoes. Ok, that was the town and after changing money (bank 1 dollar 15 nafta, at street 1 dollar 20 nafta) with some strange guys we jump to Massawa bus. Asmara is located at 2200 meters above the sea, so the way to Massawa was down hill.

There was nothing to see. It is horrible how the colonialism is already 100 years ago destroied the nature. There used to be huge forest at Eritrea. Now it is just super dry land with some bush. Italians cutted all the threes and send them to Europe. At 1940 the British came for twenty years. They kept steeling the nature and when they left they even took the railway system with them. Halleluja!

I was really expecting the Massawa city. People were talking about ” The pearl of the Red Sea”, yeah right! Massawa was bombed heavily by Ethiopian troops at 1990 and still you could see many houses full of scars. It is unbeliveable how somebody or something can bomb these kind of poverty. Massawa is really a poor place. The city it self is totally fucked up. Old Italian style houses from the beginning of the century whic are in really bad shape. Massawa has a biggest harbour in Eritrea so that was the heart of the town. And everybody can quess what kind of activities are common at cities by the sea.

We fixed for us the cheapest hotel. Hotel which name I dont remember. What a place. We paid 8 dollars together so it was like 2 euro each per night. But it was minus 5 star hotel. Trainspotting toilets and no shower. The boss of the hotel was Guiseppe, old men. His father was Italian solder who died during the war against ethiopians. Giuseppe speaked good italian so we could easily communicate with him. He told as that it is very expensive to go to the islands but we did not listening, We wanted to talk with local fisher men. In the evening we were having a good dinner in front of the Mosque which was once again singing for us. First mosquitos were biting me.
